Introduction

What is Sales? Why is it important to a business?

Obviously, you know what sales are; but maybe you don’t. Selling is what you do to make money, it’s true. I present my product/service; you buy. However, do you know how sales fuels your business and makes it so that the other parts can function better? What many neglect to understand about sales is that it’s also about building relationships that provide dividends well into the future. It takes less to get a new customer than to keep an existing one. And, if that existing one refers other people, they become an avenue to increase your sales without you lifting a finger.

In order to do so, though, you have to always safeguard the importance of the business’ relationship to its customers. In fact, at every level and in every function of a business, you are selling ALL THE TIME.  Are you well versed in all the avenues your company achieves sales? In order to be a top notch Professional Assistant, you must know how your company functions as a whole and sales are an absolutely vital piece of the puzzle.

What is marketing? Why is it important to a business?

Marketing is how your company honestly and tactfully shares their unique selling proposition with the world. Having a clever marketing squad makes all the difference in your company’s success. Even if you are not directly handling marketing, knowing what the company is doing from a marketing standpoint helps you understand the image that is being put out into the world.

What does this have to do with being a Professional Assistant?

As a Professional Assistant, you may or may not be entrusted with any of the sales and marketing functions. Often the business owner, entrepreneur or a sales leader is tasked with this most important contribution. With all the purpose that we tend to focus on in business these days, it behooves us to remember the very important fact that if we don’t strive to sell--and make money--we cease to exist. So, although almost any company you work for will likely need a very specific and very knowledgeable sales and marketing person, to take your career to the next level, it’s imperative to round out your skillset with a comprehensive sales and marketing knowledge base.

A Professional Assistant is essentially a jack-of-all-trades. Every business has different needs when it comes to the Professional Assistant role, so it is wise for you to be prepared to see the bigger picture when it comes to your company’s sales ethos.

Why should I pay attention to this?

You are entering a role that, in most cases, is the central nervous system of the company. You make things happen. You see the micro and the macro. You have ideas and take action. You see projects through and act as a second-brain to your boss. Knowing about the sales part of the business is empowering at least and a big pay raise at the most.

What else should I know?

Sales are THE most important function. Sales and customer service go hand-in-hand. Selling is confidence-building. You will never regret getting rejected and learning how to overcome this. Marketing and brand-building are exciting and creative functions that many find rewarding to be involved in. Like all other aspects of an organization, you should learn to find out where you belong and learn to love it.
